Mixed Media Vintage Frame for Art Anthology

Hi everyone, I'm up on the blog today with a design team project for Art Anthology. Recently purchased a frame at the dollar store and it was screaming to be altered. 

Lots of layers, lots of texture and a color scheme that is not usual for me. But it definitely has that grunge appeal that I so adore. 

I love taking a simple item and making it into an unexpected piece. I started off by adding lace to the foundation to provide interesting textures, then layered several different shades of inks and sprays. 

Utilized some of my metal pieces, chipboard and ideaology stash. I so enjoyed making this messy project. I hope you were inspired. And for your enjoyment I have included a process video below. I appreciate your stopping by. Wishing you a month filled with creative wonder !

Creating Rusty Effects.

We have a beautiful mood board to provide the creative inspiration this month at Art Anthology, The deep rich tones of patina'd items with the wonderful textures of rust opens a plethora of ideas for creativity.

My design team project for Art Anthology is an egg crate that I found in the trash and decided to alter it for an Easter project. The thing that really captured me with this egg crate is all texture on the material the crate was made from. 

I primed the surface first with gesso and then began to transform this item into a pretty spring piece. 

Filled with textures the once egg crate became a Easter decor piece.

The cross was created from air dry clay and then altered with crackle paste then painted with Art Anthology's paints for the antique effect. 

With the use of floral fillers and assorted flowers, the piece came together right in time for the Easter season.

You've Been Steam Punk'd

Hi everyone... it was time to get messy and have fun with one of my most favorite themes... Steampumk... Created from inspiration provided by Flying Unicorn to create something using the backside of the canvas, I decided to create my steampunk gentleman.

Let's see... the canvas was prep'd by adding loads of textures from sand, texture paste, inks, paints & embossing powders. The gears at the top left were Blue Ferns chipboard and they were stamped with Andy Skinner's texture stamps then DecoArts paints in the following colors Quinacridone Gold, Transparent Red & Yellow Iron Oxide allowed me to achieve the rusty effect. 

The hat, glasses and mustache were all wooden pieces purchased from Michaels. The glasses were embossed with gold crackle, the hat was painted black and then molding paste was added for texture and then heat embossed with bronze patina powder. Finishing off the hat with feathers and cogs. 

For the mustache I used Paper Clay and molded it onto the wood piece. Then rolled long pieces to create the hair effect. Painted it black and dry brushed with white. The nose was created using a door knob screwed into the canvas. 

The inside of the canvas is hard to see, but I took metal tape and adhered it to cardstock, ran it through my Big Shot using cogs texture plate. Using the same Deco Arts paints listed above I random painted over the surface and once dried I randomly sanded areas away exposing the metal from beneath. I then added a bit of Ranger Vintaj Patina in Verdigris to provide that nice patina look. I hope you enjoyed and were inspired to bring out your inner steampunk. xoxo Toni

THREE MUSES challenge "Rust"

Three Muses always pushes you right out of that creative box with their themes, and this week is no different. If any one knows me, then they know I love that old, grundgy, vintage look, so I had a real good time rusting up some goodies. Dug deep into my basket of T!m goodies and used his clock masks for the back drop on my canvas, Word stick "Time" and birdcage die cut which I just love.

The canvas, birdcage and dove stickpins got a good washing of rusting chemicals. These bird cages in all their rusted and patina'd glory will soon be for sale at our store "Studio Garage Band"
